I’m a big proponent of preventative medicine rather than curative medicine. If some future medical problem can be prevented by doing something that you have control over, I’m all for it. That’s why it’s so important to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and take a high quality daily nutritional supplement. Protecting our cells and the systems that protect us, in my estimation, is critical. One such system is the immune system.

In a report from Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief Science Officer, he says that “our immune system uses heat to destroy invading bacteria. A specialized cell called a macrophage douses the invader with inflammatory enzymes (like acids) and the heat generated in this battle destroys the invading bacteria.”

“Sometimes our own healthy cells become the focus for disease. This often happens because of toxic exposure. When we eat, drink or breathe a toxin, or if it is absorbed through our skin, our detoxification system works to remove it before the poison can compromise our health. Unfortunately, many of today’s poisons are simply too strong and they overwhelm our detoxification system and enter healthy cells. These cells now become the target of disease, infection and inflammation. Our immune system must treat them as hostile and use heat to destroy them.”

“Autoimmune diseases arise when our immune system becomes so overworked that it can no longer tell the difference between healthy cells and sick cells. It attacks all cells of a particular type equally. This body system is never able to heal and chronic inflammation sets in.” [1]

After further review of the immune system, autoimmune disorders, and inflammation, I’ve found this information on the Medline Plus web site, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders.

Normally the immune system’s army of white blood cells helps protect the body from harmful substances, called antigens. Examples of antigens include bacteria, viruses, toxins, cancer cells, and foreign blood or tissues from another person or species. The immune system produces antibodies that destroy these harmful substances.

But in patients with an autoimmune disorder, the immune system can’t tell the difference between healthy body tissue and antigens. The result is an immune response that destroys normal body tissues. The response is a hypersensitivity reaction similar to allergies, where the immune system reacts to a substance that it normally would ignore. In allergies, the immune system reacts to an external substance that would normally be harmless. With autoimmune disorders, the immune system reacts to normal body tissues.

What causes the immune system to no longer distinguish between healthy body tissues and antigens is unknown. One theory holds that various microorganisms and drugs may trigger some of these changes, particularly in persons who are genetically prone to autoimmune disorders.[2]

Minchew explains more about toxins and their affects on the immune system.

“When a toxin overwhelms your detoxification process it will likely settle in your weakest system. The immune system melts these polluted cells in an effort to save healthy cells. This is acute inflammation. With chronic toxicity comes the opportunity for chronic inflammation. In the case of chronic inflammation, the immune system attacks any sick cell as well as any healthy cell that looks like the sick one. If the immune system attacks connective tissue we say a person has lupus. If it attacks the beta cells of the pancreas we say they have type 1 diabetes. If it attacks the joints we say they have rheumatoid arthritis.

How do we treat an autoimmune disorder? Medical professionals basically determine the proper procedure, however, Minchew says that “we simply must reduce our toxic exposure to reduce the chances of developing an autoimmune disorder. And we must also develop emotional coping strategies and have all of the nutrients we need in our body in the right quantity – every moment of every day.”

On the medical side of the equation, and according to the Medicine Plus web site, treatments can be as simple as using supplements, or as drastic as blood transfusion.

The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms and control the autoimmune process while maintaining the body’s ability to fight disease. Treatments vary widely and depend on the specific disease and your symptoms.

Some patients may need supplements to replenish a hormone or vitamin that the body is lacking. Examples include thyroid supplements, vitamins, or insulin injections.

If the autoimmune disorder affects the blood, the person may need blood transfusions.

Measures to help with movement or other functions may be needed for autoimmune disorders that affect the bones, joints, or muscles.

Medicines are often prescribed to control or reduce the immune system’s response. Such medicines may include corticosteroids and immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclophosphamide or azathioprine.[2]

I don’t know about you, but if we can prevent our bodies from contracting this disorder, I’m all for it. With that said, and something (prevention) I believe in, I’d rather follow Mr. Minchew’s advice. “We simply must reduce our toxic exposure to reduce the chances of developing an autoimmune disorder. And we must also develop emotional coping strategies and have all of the nutrients we need in our body in the right quantity – every moment of every day.”

To me, that sounds like a better option, to “have all of the nutrients we need in our body in the right quantity – every moment of every day.”

One way to do get a the nutrients our bodies need is to take a high quality daily nutritional supplement, and drink TriVita’s Sonoran Bloom Nopalea® on a daily basis. Combining these two products work wonders to keep your body in top physical shape, right down to the cellular level. Start on the road to preventing unwanted diseases today. Your body will thank you in the future.

    Omega Prime

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish such as tuna and salmon may protect against progression of age-related macular degeneration, but the benefits appear to depend on the stage of disease and whether certain supplements are taken, researchers say.

Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic eye disease marked by deterioration of tissue in the part of your eye that’s responsible for central vision. The deterioration occurs in the macula (MAK-u-luh), which is in the center of the retina — the layer of tissue on the inside back wall of your eyeball.

Macular degeneration doesn’t cause total blindness, but it worsens your quality of life by blurring or causing a blind spot in your central vision. Clear central vision is necessary for reading, driving, recognizing faces and doing detail work.[1]

The researchers calculated intakes of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid from dietary questionnaires administered to 2,924 men and women, ages 55 to 80, participating in an eight-year supplement trial, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study of the National Eye Institute. [2]

The trial results suggest taking supplements of antioxidants plus zinc prevents progression of late-stage AMD. [2]

The results, which are published online ahead of print in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, are in a report from researchers at the Laboratory for Nutrition and Vision Research, and Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

Eating two to three servings of fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, shellfish, and herring every week would achieve the recommended daily intake of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid.

However, the majority of the study participants participants and Americans eat a much lower level than recommended.

“:If changing dietary habits is not easy, supplementation is an option,” says corresponding author Chung-Jung Chiu.

As a matter of fact, the American Heart Association (AHA) also recommends eating fish, high in omega-3 fatty acids, at least 2 times a week. However, it’s advised that pregnant women, nursing mothers, young children, and women who might become pregnant not eat several types of fish, including swordfish, shark, and king mackerel. These individuals should also limit consumption of other fish, including albacore tuna, salmon, and herring. They can take omega-3 fatty acids in quality dietary supplements that are certified mercury-free by a reputable third-party lab, like TriVita’s Omega Prime.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from food or through supplementation. One daily dose of Omega Prime provides the amount of Omega-3 recommended by the AHA for healthy individuals, as well as for those who have heart disease or the risk of it.

The AHA has already proven that omega-3 fatty acids is important to a healthy heart, but now, it seems that there is some evidence to back up the the facts that omega-3 fatty acids also help people suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Prevention may be your best medicine. With all the great supplements on the market, it doesn’t make sense for anyone to suffer for diseases that can be prevented. “After 13 years my husband finally found some relief.”

“My husband has a dreaded, said-to-be incurable auto-immune disease, called Neurosarcoidosis; yet we have some outstanding news due to this wonderful nutraceutical breakthrough! We felt energized to write this testimony and share. I can honestly say that after watching my husband suffer through thirteen years of headaches, joint, back, rib, muscle, feet, leg and arm pain, it was a tremendous relief for me to see his pain be relieved. When taking Nopalea he has mostly pain-free days. Finally after 13 years we have found a natural product, not some other poisonous pharmaceutical. The Nopalea relieves his pain day after day with no side effects, and with no threat of damaging other organs of his body.

My husband was very sceptical as he had tried several types of prescribed medications to attempt to eliminate the disease itself or the symptoms and pain cause by Neurosarcoidosis. Not much worked.

It took some strong arming to convince my husband to try Nopalea as he had already attempted acupuncture, homeopathic products and a multitude of vitamins and supplements with no relief. In fact, when the Nopalea arrived he set it on the counter for one week and would not open the box. His fear was that it would not work and he would be greatly disappointed all over again.

We prayed about it and he finally decided to try it. Much to his surprise, it worked within a couple of hours – his pain started to diminish! He could not believe it; he thought his mind was playing tricks on him. Now, he can’t stop telling everyone about it. This is a real praise for us, God does answer prayer; sometimes not in the time frame or way we expect Him too.” Sheryl C. – Placerville , CA.

    Raw Food Diet

    Desperate to lose weight

Eating raw foods is natural. Our bodies thrive on all that is fresh and vital. A raw food diet (or increasing the amount of raw food that you eat) is bound to bring a feeling of increased wellbeing.

Raw food diets are based on unprocessed and uncooked plant foods, preferably organic, such as a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit, fresh juices and purified water.

    Why Raw Foods?

Basically a vegetarian diet, the raw food diet promotes eating and drinking ‘living’ foods. Living foods and juices contain the maximum amount of fibre found in raw produce, fibre that can be lost in processing. Such foods are easily metabolised and tend to be lower in calories than the average diet.

Heating food above 116F destroys enzymes in food that aid in digestion and in absorption of food, diminishing its nutritional value.

Benefits of a Raw Food Diet

A diet of at least 75% raw food offers numerous health benefits, such as increased energy, improved skin appearance, better digestion, weight loss and reduced risk of serious illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

A raw food diet contains little or no saturated fats, is low in sodium, high in potassium, magnesium, folate and fibre. Raw food diets are also excellent detoxifying diets. Different combinations of raw, living foods and juices can be used for colon cleansing, liver cleansing, kidney cleansing and skin cleansing.

The Basics of a Raw Food Diet

Any fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, beans, nuts, legumes, young coconut milk – even seaweed – can be menu items of a raw food diet. Your choice of foods may depend on your reasons for dieting, for example:

    – sprouted brown rice slows glucose absorption and improves the metabolism – cabbage supports healthy cellular function; radish leaves act as an anti-oxidant, as does Shitake mushroom

-carrots are a great source of vitamin A as well as encouraging healthy vision and a healthy cardio-vascular system

You can use a sprouter such as the Easy Green automatic sprouter to sprout seeds, grains, beans – even wheatgrass. Sprouts could be called a ’super food’ – organic sprouts contain enormous levels of proteins, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, chlorophyll pigments and enzymes, and are the ideal natural supplement.

Sprouts can be used in salads and soups, or can be juiced. Fresh juices are a great ready energy supply and a good quality juicer, such as the Kempo Greenpower juicer, produces living juices that are full of essential nutrients. A great juicing recipe to complement a raw food diet is carrot juice with potato, fennel and apple. Simply juice 4 medium carrots, 2 apples, 1 small potato and 1 small stalk of fennel. Fennel has been shown to reduce and control inflammation of arthritis, it evens mood fluctuation and depressive states and has the rare nutrient called manganese, plus zinc and vitamin B complex. The nutritional value of grains and seeds is impressive. They contain most of the vitamins – particularly A, B, and E. They’re also fantastic natural sources of unsaturated fatty acids and lecithin, and an excellent source of proteins.

You can even use soy milk makers (such as SoyQuick) to make non-dairy drinks from different beans, rice, nuts, seeds and grains to have with breakfast. If you want something a little more substantial than soy milk you can make your tofu (or, of course, visit a good health food shop).

Essentially, the idea of a raw food diet is to eat unprocessed foods for at least 75% of the time. If the idea of raw food isn’t very appetising to you, you can warm the food a little as long as the food isn’t heated above 116F.

    Weight Loss

    Desperate to lose weight

Nowadays more and more people are suffering from weight problems. How to achieve a health weight becomes a fashionable topic. While there are so many weight loss tips, it may be difficult to tell good ones from the nonsense. Everyone is looking for the easy way out. Usually there are three main ways to lose weight and keep fit, involving proper diet, good weight loss products and exercising.

Just as a car needs fuel to run, it is very important to provide our body with energy. A proper diet will contribute to health weight. Weight loss will only occur if you burn more than you consume. It means stop taking in fast food, cut back on alcohol, eat fruits and vegetables and avoid candy, cakes, cookies and other crap.

Due to the weight problems, a lot of weight loss products are being developed. The use of the products can help people decrease appetite and the absorption of fat. There are many types of weight loss products in the market, such as bars, pills and patches .However, some are safe to use and others are not. People usually go for natural weight loss products, which have full refund guarantee and stay away from counterfeit diet pills. Even so, weight loss products are not the best way to keep fit. They provide people with short term weight loss. In many cases, people regain the weight they had lost and sometimes even more after they stop to take weight loss products.

Aside from the best diet pills, exercise can be very physically rewarding. It can help lose weight and attain your dreams. Running is not only excellent exercise, it is an efficient way to burn calories and lose weight. You may hear other exercise like walking and jogging for fat burning, but running is right at the top as a weight-loss exercise. It is proved that a 150-pound person will burn 100 calories while running.

In a word, adopting a health life is the most important thing when you want to lose weight and keep fit. If you find it difficult to achieve the goal of loosing one large quantity of weight, you can break it down into smaller daily goals and then your dream will finally come true.

    Can Vegetarian Benefit from B12

New DocumentCan Vegetarian Benefit from B12

The popularity of vegetarian diets has risen along with an interest in avoiding meat and meat products for environmental, philosophical, and health reasons. However, the term vegetarianism is subject to a wide range of interpretations. Some people consider themselves to be vegetarian when they avoid red meat.

Others believe that vegetarianism requires avoidance of all products that come from animals, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy foods. The most commonly described forms of vegetarianism include: “lacto-ovo vegetarians”, who avoid products that come from meat, poultry, and fish but consume eggs and dairy foods; “strict vegetarians”, who avoid meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy foods; and “vegans”, who avoid meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy foods and also do not use products that come from animals such as honey, leather, fur, silk, and wool.

Strict vegetarians and vegans are at greater risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency than lacto-ovo vegetarians and nonvegetarians because natural food sources of vitamin B12 are limited to foods that come from animals.

Fortified cereals are one of the few sources of vitamin B12 from plants, and are an important dietary source of vitamin B12 for strict vegetarians and vegans. Strict vegetarians and vegans who do not consume foods that come from plants that are fortified with vitamin B12 need to consider taking a dietary supplement that contains vitamin B12 and should discuss the need for vitamin B12 supplements with their physician.

It is widely believed that vitamin B12 can be consistently obtained from nutritional yeasts. Consumers should be aware that these products may or may not contain added nutrients such as vitamin B12. Dietary supplements are regulated as foods rather than drugs, and companies that sell supplements such as nutritional yeasts fortified with vitamin B12 can legally change their formulation at any time. If you choose to supplement, select reliable sources of vitamin B12 and read product labels carefully.

When adults adopt a strict vegetarian diet, deficiency symptoms can be slow to appear. It may take years to deplete normal body stores of vitamin B12. However, breast-fed infants of women who follow strict vegetarian diets have very limited reserves of vitamin B12 and can develop a vitamin B12 deficiency within months.

This is of particular concern because undetected and untreated vitamin B12 deficiency in infants can result in permanent neurologic damage. Consequences of such neurologic damage are severe and can be irreversible. There are many case reports in the literature of infants and children who suffered consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency. It is very important for mothers who follow a strict vegetarian diet to consult with a pediatrician regarding appropriate use of vitamin B12 supplements for their infants and children.

    Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Dementia

Researchers have long been interested in the potential connection between vitamin B12 deficiency and dementia. A recent review examined correlations between cognitive skills, homocysteine levels, and blood levels of folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6.

The authors suggested that vitamin B12 deficiency may decrease levels of substances needed for the metabolism of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit nerve signals. Reduced levels of neurotransmitters may result in cognitive impairment.

In 142 individuals considered at risk for dementia, researchers found that a daily supplement providing 2 milligrams (mg) folic acid and 1 mg vitamin B12, taken for 12 weeks, lowered homocysteine levels by 30%. They also demonstrated that cognitive impairment was significantly associated with elevated plasma total homocysteine. However, the decrease in homocysteine levels seen with the use of vitamin supplements did not improve cognition. It is too soon to make any recommendations, but is an intriguing area of research.

    More Benefits of Vitamin B12

New DocumentMore Benefits of Vitamin B12

Folic Acid And Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Folic acid can correct the anemia that is caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Unfortunately, folic acid will not correct the nerve damage also caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Permanent nerve damage can occur if vitamin B12 deficiency is not treated. Folic acid intake from food and supplements should not exceed 1,000 µg daily in healthy individuals because large amounts of folic acid can trigger the damaging effects of vitamin B12 deficiency. Adults older than 50 years who take a folic acid supplement should ask their physician or qualified health care provider about their need for additional vitamin B12.

What is the relationship between vitamin B12 homocysteine, and cardiovascular disease?

Cardiovascular disease involves any disorder of the heart and blood vessels that make up the cardiovascular system. Coronary heart disease occurs when blood vessels which supply the heart become clogged or blocked, increasing the risk of a heart attack. Vascular damage can also occur to blood vessels supplying the brain, and can result in a stroke.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in industrialized countries such as the United States, and is on the rise in developing countries. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health has identified many risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including an elevated LDL-cholesterol level, high blood pressure, a low HDL-cholesterol level, obesity, and diabetes. In recent years, researchers have identified another risk factor for cardiovascular disease: an elevated homocysteine level.

Homocysteine is an amino acid normally found in blood, but elevated levels have been linked with coronary heart disease and stroke. Elevated homocysteine levels may impair endothelial vasomotor function, which determines how easily blood flows through blood vessels. High levels of homocysteine also may damage coronary arteries and make it easier for blood clotting cells called platelets to clump together and form a clot, which may lead to a heart attack.

Vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin B6 are involved in homocysteine metabolism. In fact, a deficiency of vitamin B12 ,folate, or vitamin B6 may increase blood levels of homocysteine. Recent studies found that vitamin B12 and folic acid supplements decreased homocysteine levels in subjects with vascular disease and in young adult women. The most significant drop in homocysteine level was seen when folic acid was taken alone. A significant decrease in homocysteine levels also occurred in older men and women who took a multivitamin/ multimineral supplement for 8 weeks. The supplement taken provided 100% of Daily Values (DVs) for nutrients in the supplement.

Evidence supports a role for folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements for lowering homocysteine levels, however this does not mean that these supplements will decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Clinical intervention trials are underway to determine whether folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 supplements can lower risk of coronary heart disease. It is premature to recommend vitamin B12 supplements for the prevention of heart disease until results of ongoing randomized clinical trials positively link increased vitamin B12 intake from supplements with decreased homocysteine levels AND decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Benefits of B12 and Those Senior Moments

New DocumentBenefits of B12 For Those Senior Moments

B12 is the key to reclaiming your mental energy.

Brain erosion can start as early as age 30.
Most everyone has “senior moments.” You’ll be talking with someone and suddenly you can’t remember your best friend’s name or the movie you saw last night. These are fairly commonplace occurrences for people as they age and nothing to worry about as long as they don’t happen very often.

However, if your age is creeping up to 40, 50 or 60 then you have reason to be concerned if:

    • Your memory is starting to slip
    • Your agility, coordination and balance may be off
    • It’s harder for you to focus and concentrate
    • Your attention span is shorter
    • Your concentration is scattered
    • It’s more difficult for you to start or sustain a conversation
    • Your handwriting is becoming sloppy or illegible
    • You are starting to wonder whether you are getting dementia.

If one or more of these is happening to you, it could be the result of brain erosion. Brain erosion means that the brain actually erodes or shrinks. Can the brain really shrink? Yes it can! The human brain may lose from 10 to 25 percent of its total volume due to the effects of stress.

That’s scary enough, but now brain erosion is happening to people at a much younger age than in the past. Statistics from the 1970s and 1980s found brain erosion only in people over 50. However, a major study conducted by Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri) detected brain volume loss as early as age 30. Researchers also discovered that this brain volume loss often leads to dementia.*

There is a “miracle” that can help your memory as you age!

The miracle is vitamin B12, a common vitamin found in everyday foods and multivitamins that you may already be taking. B12 is extremely vital in brain and nerve function—playing an integral part in memory. However, according to medical science, as you age, your body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 through food and pills decreases. In fact, many adults may be unable to absorb vitamin B at all and have to receive expensive B12 shots each month!

Now there is something that works like a B12 shot —

without the expense and pain of an injection! People have experienced amazing B12 benefits from these shots over the years. But now, there is something more convenient than a B12 shot . Dr. Libby’s original, patented Sublingual B12, B-6 & Folic Acid from TriVita gives you all the benefits of B12 you need—so you avoid the pain and expense of an injection.
